Well not really.......As a Home Educator, the question I get a lot this time of year is "Do you "school" in the Summer? I don't have an short answer for this question. It goes back to my philosophy of Education. In short, my philosophy of education is that children are always learning. I believe that children are most active and engaged in learning when they are surrounded by beautiful things that interest them. I believe we can create interest by giving them an inspiring environment to learn! I believe in enchanting a child's education!I believe children should make progress! I do not think this has to happen in the 4 walls of a classroom. I do not purchase a boxed curriculum at the beginning of the school year for my children, so I have no idea how many days we've been in school. I have no idea what "lesson number" we are on each day. 2 years ago, I jumped in with both feet to the Brave Writer Lifestyle. This lifestyle approach to learning has changed my kids (and me!) where they enjoy learning each and every day....even in the summer!!!! It is a lifestyle and that lifestyle does not stop just because it is hot outside. This is why Brave Writer Works.
One aspect of the Brave Writer Lifestyle is teaching Shakespeare. I had this "slotted" in my brain for Ava's 4th grade year and the boys 5th grade year. In Preparation for this, I started gathering my "curriculum"
BUT........this is where the Magic can happen if you let it!!!!!!!!! We have found a new magical place near our home by the name of READ PLAY LOVE. The kids were in a Spring Musical recently and loved every minute of their time on stage. Then the director announced the Summer Show......
A Shakespeare Inspired Show.
The kids were super excited to Audition and were cast as Romeo, from Romeo and Juliet
Jacques from As You Like It and Beatrice from Much A Do About Nothing
This immediately sent them to find a box of books I had on the bookshelf "for next year" to look up their stories and characters. They have almost read the entire box of books.
So.....do I "school" in the summer? No. Do my children learn in the Summer.....Absolutely! Its a great way to learn and great lifestyle that last all year long!!!
